A vintage two-piece glazed ceramic cookie jar in the form of a rotund chef, produced as a piece of Black Americana by the Pearl China Company. The figure is hand-painted with a pale yellow-cream uniform and hat, high-gloss black skin tones, and vibrant red lips. The front bib area features the word COOKY and circular buttons, both accented with hand-applied 22kt gold decoration. The underside of the base features a black printed mark depicting a seashell with the script word Pearl inside, above the text CHINA CO. HAND DECORATED 22 KT. GOLD U.S.A. The manufacturer mold number 639 is incised into the ceramic paste on the bottom.Height: 10 1/4 inchesWidth: 5 3/4 inchesPearl China Co chef jar is in very good vintage condition, with the general character of the wear consistent with age and use. There is visible rubbing and fading to the 22kt gold accents on the buttons and the COOKY lettering. The unglazed bottom foot ring shows dark soiling and typical shelf wear. Minor inherent manufacturing imperfections include small glaze pinholes and dark specks, but the piece has no visible chips, cracks, or repairs.
