Antique solid cast sad iron, also called a flatiron, of the type heated directly on a wood cook stove. It is a one piece casting with a raised arched handle on two posts, a pointed nose and a squared heel. The sole plate is smooth and shows heavy old scratching and rust bloom across the whole face. There is raised lettering or a size number cast into the top deck between the handle posts, but it is worn and crusted with old scale and could not be read clearly in the photos, so no maker is claimed. Against the ruler it runs about five inches long and about four and one half inches tall to the top of the handle. Condition is fair, normal for a piece this age. Expect heavy surface rust, pitting, and flaking old black paint or stove scale. No cracks or breaks were found and the handle is solid. It displays well as a doorstop, bookend, shelf piece or country kitchen accent. The word sad in sad iron comes from an old English word meaning solid or heavy, not unhappy. Estimated Value: $15 to $30 based on comparable recent sales. Sold as-is. Photos are the most accurate description of this lot. Written descriptions are a guide only and may contain errors.
