Victor Stepanovich Podgoursky (Russian, 1893–1969) Portrait of a Chinese Scholar Reading. Oil on canvas, signed lower right Podgorski (appears). A compelling portrait depicting an elderly Chinese gentleman quietly reading a newspaper or manuscript. Executed with remarkable sensitivity, the sitter's weathered features, contemplative expression and richly modeled robes are rendered against a subdued background, demonstrating the artist's mastery of light and character. The restrained palette and realistic handling are consistent with portraits associated with Victor Podgoursky during his Shanghai period. Art measures 21.5" x 26" Frame measures 25.5" x 31" Podgoursky studied at the Moscow School of Painting before emigrating to Shanghai in the early twentieth century, where he became recognized for portraits and scenes depicting Chinese life. His works are represented in numerous private collections and continue to attract strong interest at auction. Presented in a later carved wood frame. Provenance Estate of John Hall Paxton and Anne Paxton. John Hall Paxton served as an American diplomat in China and is remembered for his humanitarian efforts assisting women and children fleeing Communist China in 1949. The painting has remained in the Paxton family collection until the present estate. Condition consistent with age. Catalog Note Property from the Estate of Ambassador John Hall Paxton. This work descends from the estate of American diplomat John Hall Paxton (1892-1952), whose distinguished Foreign Service career included postings in China during the turbulent years preceding the Communist Revolution. Paxton gained international recognition for organizing the evacuation of hundreds of women and children from China in 1949. The painting's provenance places it within a historically significant diplomatic collection assembled during the era in which Victor Podgoursky was actively painting in Shanghai.
