This is a traditional German hunting cutlass (Hirschfänger) featuring a stag antler grip pin-mounted with a silvered emblem displaying a stag head with the letters "DJV" (Deutscher Jagdverband). The acronym "DJV" stands for the Deutscher Jagdverband(German Hunting Association). This organization was founded in 1949 in post-war West Germany to replace the wartime hunting body. The hilt features brass fittings including a fluted pommel cap, hooved quillons on the crossguard, and a fluted clamshell handguard. The single-edged, unfullered steel blade is decorated with light etched floral scrollwork near the ricasso and fits into a black leather scabbard with an acorn-embossed brass throat mount and matching brass chape. Condition appears overall fair to good, showing age-appropriate patina and tarnish to the brass fittings. The black leather scabbard demonstrates heavy surface crazing, cracking, and finish loss along its entire length. The etched blade displays light surface pitting andage oxidation. Blade thickness measures 4.23 mm; total weight measures 485.2 grams. Overall length in scabbard measures 25 inches; blade length measures 19.5 inches. Featuring traditional hooved quillons, a clamshell guard, and an etched hunting blade, this Hirschfänger represents a classic German sporting sidearm.
