Produced as a World War I commemorative item, this German silvered metal "Bayern Thaler 1914/16" locket container is styled after a Bavarian 3-Mark coin. The obverse features a profile portrait of King Ludwig III encircled by "LUDWIG III KOENIG VON BAYERN," while the reverse displays the crowned Bavarian coat of arms flanked by lions, reading "IN TREUE FEST" above and "BAYERN THALER / 1914/16" below. The two coin halves pull apart to reveal a fold-out accordion paper insert featuring color-printed illustrations depicting military subjects, including naval hero Otto von Weddigen and coastal artillery ("Strandbatterie"), paired with Bavarian lozenge pattern paper linings and an outer cover reading "Unseren tapferen BAYERN in Treue und Dankbarkeit gewidmet." Normal age-appropriate wear is present throughout, including light surface scuffing, minor tarnish to the metal casing, and minor wear or creasing to the paper insert edges. The coin casing and paper accordion mechanism remain intactand complete. Measures approximately 2 inches in diameter. A highly detailed piece of World War I German patriotic home-front memorabilia, offering exceptional appeal for militaria and numismatic display collections.
