ca: Dated 1824; Attributed to being by "Ann Maria Gillespeys, Sampler made in the Year of our Lord 1824. 14th year at her age, by instruction of Miss H. Lutz, May 7th". This line and spot sampler is silks and cotton stitched on a non-bleached homespun linen woven towel. The upper three quarter of the towel has ten lines of alphabet and number samples with three lines of cross-stitch open-loop letters. It has ten sample line embroidery with lower quarter having black stitch cross-stitch attributing line with lower six spot figural examples of urn, flowers, etc. The lower field includes letters "A.B.", in a modern era frame.; frame 12" x 19"; Condition: Note- sampler date does not seem consistent with eras of some thread selections. Magenta tone embroidery was introduced in 1859, and the lime green tone is later era introduction. Age of sampler is in question, please judge for yourself. Not removed from frame during cataloging. It may have been infilled with later era thread, however "tea dying" may have been used as well. No damage.
