The very first year of the Peace Dollar series, this 1921 Silver Peace Dollar holds a special place in American numismatic history. Struck at the Philadelphia Mint, it is composed of 90% silver and contains approximately .7734 troy ounces of pure silver. Designed by Anthony de Francisci, the obverse features Liberty wearing a radiant crown, while the reverse depicts an eagle perched on a rock with an olive branch. The coin was created to commemorate the restoration of peace following World War I. The 1921 issue is particularly notable as the inaugural year of the Peace Dollar series and was struck in high relief, giving the original design impressive depth and detail. It remains one of the most sought-after dates by collectors of American silver dollars.
