This collection consists of 20 Edison Amberol phonograph cylinder records, produced by the National Phonograph Co. in the early 20th century. These are 4-minute format records designed for playback at 160 revolutions per minute. The mediaincludes both dark wax cylinders and at least one blue celluloid Blue Amberol cylinder. The cylinders are housed in their original green cardboard canisters, which feature a decorative label with a portrait of Thomas A. Edison and the textEdison Amberol Record, Four Minute. The matching lids are fitted with circular paper labels that specify the catalog number, title, artist, and playback instructions. Title information and catalog numbers are also embossed directly ontothe beveled rims of the cylinders. The assortment covers a variety of early 20th-century genres, including ragtime, marches, sacred songs, and comedy skits. Notable performers featured in this group include Sophie Tucker, Sousa's Band, CalMedia: The wax and celluloid cylinders are generally in good to very good visual condition, though they exhibit surface dust and minor residue. It is noted that several cylinders are currently matches their respective lids and canisters.
