and Community by Alfredo Lopez Morales (Peruvian, b. 1958) Master Ayacucho Retablo Artist. Alfredo Lopez Morales is one of the most recognized living continuators of Ayacucho's celebrated retablo tradition. Grandson and direct heir to the legacy of Joaquin Lopez Antay-one of the most illustrious and influential figures in twentieth-century Peruvian art-he has dedicated his career to preserving the knowledge transmitted through his family while expanding it through highly original retablos, canvases, masks, crosses, murals, and contemporary compositions. In recognition of his distinguished career, he received the prestigious Joaquin Lopez Antay Medal in 2022. This monumental original retablo is an extraordinary architectural and narrative composition conceived as a unique work of art. Its tall, house-shaped structure is crowned by a triangular pediment decorated with a radiant floral emblem, while the exterior doors display exuberant botanical forms in red, violet, green, blue, pink, and yellow. When closed, the retablo presents the commanding appearance of a brilliantly painted ceremonial cabinet. Opening the two doors reveals a spectacular interior arranged across four densely populated levels. Hundreds of individually formed and painted figures animate scenes of faith, communal gatherings, music, celebration, work, memory, and everyday life. At the center of the second level, a Crucifixion scene marked by the inscription "INRI" establishes a powerful devotional focus, surrounded by an extraordinary concentration of miniature figures and ornamental details. Every section invites close observation. The upper and lower compartments contain richly layered crowds, musicians, families, animals, ceremonial participants, and numerous miniature narratives, each possessing its own color, gesture, and expressive character. The remarkable abundance of figures transforms the retablo into a complete visual universe in which sacred and everyday life coexist. The floral decoration of the doors is not merely ornamental. It creates a vivid transition between the closed and open states of the work, moving from bold contemporary abstraction on the exterior to an intensely detailed narrative world within. This dialogue between architecture, painting, sculpture, devotion, and storytelling demonstrates Alfredo Lopez Morales's mastery of the historic Ayacucho retablo and his highly personal interpretation of the tradition inherited from Joaquin Lopez Antay. Entirely conceived and handcrafted as an original composition, this retablo is a one-of-a-kind work; no second example is intended to be identical. Its monumental scale, extraordinary number of miniature figures, vibrant painted doors, and direct connection to the legendary Lopez Antay lineage make it an exceptional centerpiece for an important collection of Peruvian or Latin American art. Works by the artist have previously been presented through auctions organized by the Museo de Arte de Lima (MALI).
