George Luks (American, 1867-1933) Drawing on paper depicting a man in a wide-brimmed hat operating a horse-drawn carriage, executed with rapid, gestural strokes and a focus on everyday life. Signed lower right. Framed. George Luks was a prominent American realist painter and a key member of the Ashcan School. He is best known for his empathetic yet unsentimental portrayals of New York City's immigrant and working-class populations. His background as a newspaper illustrator influenced his energetic, spontaneous technique and commitment to depicting social reality.
