Offered is a 1964-D Kennedy Half Dollar, struck at the Denver Mint. This is the first year of the Kennedy Half Dollar series and one of the most popular 90% silver U.S. half dollars. Please review the photos for the exact condition, surfaces, and overall appearance. The Kennedy Half Dollar was introduced in 1964, just months after the assassination of President John F. Kennedy in November 1963. The obverse was designed by Gilroy Roberts, while the reverse was designed by Frank Gasparro. The coin quickly became a popular keepsake and collectible. The 1964-D had a mintage of 156,205,446 coins and was struck in 90% silver and 10% copper. Each half dollar weighs 12.5 grams and contains approximately 0.3617 troy ounces of pure silver. The “D” mint mark identifies it as a Denver Mint issue. The 1964-D is especially significant because 1964 was the only year regular-issue Kennedy Half Dollars were struck in 90% silver. Beginning in 1965, the circulating half dollar was changed to a 40% silver composition.
