The California State Quarter was released on January 31, 2005, as the 31st coin in the 50 State Quarters Program. The reverse design features conservationist John Muir overlooking Yosemite Valley, with Half Dome and a California condor also depicted. California entered the Union on September 9, 1850. The 2005-D California Quarter was struck at the Denver Mint with a mintage of 263,200,000 coins. The standard circulating issue is composed of 75% copper and 25% nickel, weighs 5.67 grams, and measures 24.3 mm in diameter.
