1966 Silver Special Mint Set

1966 U.S. Silver Special Mint Set, featuring the special coins produced by the U.S. Mint during the transition away from circulating silver coinage. The set contains a Kennedy Half Dollar, Washington Quarter, and Roosevelt Dime, all struck in the 1965–1967 era with the distinctive Special Mint Set finish. The 1966 Special Mint Set was produced at the Philadelphia Mint and contains 40% silver Kennedy Half Dollars, while the Washington Quarter and Roosevelt Dime were struck in the new copper-nickel clad composition. The set was issued as an alternative to traditional Proof Sets during the period when the Mint temporarily suspended Proof production. The Kennedy Half Dollar contains 40% silver and 60% copper, weighs 11.50 grams, and contains approximately 0.2959 troy ounces of pure silver. The 1966 Special Mint Set is also collectible for its distinctive satin-like finish and the period's unusual minting history.
