Impressive Continental-style neoclassical table lamp fashioned as a classical two-handled urn, the dark patinated metal body richly cast in continuous high relief with animated mythological and bacchanalian figures, attendants, drapery and scrolling ornament. The urn is framed by bold upright scrolling handles, bands of egg-and-dart, leaf-tip and gadrooned decoration, and a lower frieze populated with additional classical figures and motifs. It rises from an acanthus-decorated socle onto a substantial stepped green-and-white veined marble plinth with architectural corner feet, while the upper section has been fitted for electricity with a single socket. This combination of a classical bronze urn, figural relief decoration and marble base is characteristic of French and Continental neoclassical decorative lighting of the late 19th to early 20th century; closely related bronze urn-form lamps with classical reliefs and marble plinths appear in auction records. The lamp presents with an attractive aged patina, scattered rubbing and oxidation to the metal, minor surface wear and small edge abrasions to the marble consistent with age; wiring and electrical components appear later and lamp is in working condition.Measures 18"H x 7"W x 5.5"D.
