Sarreid Ltd. Pine Bear with Brass Ball Sculpture

A wonderfully expressive mid-century decorative sculpture attributed to Sarreid Ltd., circa 1970s, featuring a hand-carved pine bear seated upright and clutching a large spherical brass ball between its forepaws. The bear is boldly modeled with deeply incised linear carving throughout the coat, creating a lively striated texture that follows the contours of the body, while the face is given a whimsical, almost folk-art character through broad eyes, rounded muzzle, upright ears, and contrasting pale-painted or limed accents worked into the carved recesses. The substantial brass sphere provides an appealing contrast of material and surface, its softly aged golden patina complementing the warm honey-brown tone of the wood. This combination of knotty pine carving and brass is characteristic of Sarreid decorative furnishings and sculpture from the 1970s; a closely corresponding Sarreid example is specifically documented as a hand-carved pine bear “playing with a brass ball.” The ball is removable and has a dent and condition is good overall with scattered rubbing, scratches, finish wear, areas of loss and irregularity to the pale accent decoration, and expected oxidation and surface spotting to the brass ball, all consistent with age and display; the sculpture retains an especially appealing rustic decorative presence.
