Andy Donato (born 1937), Original Editorial Cartoo

Updated August 18, 2026

An original editorial cartoon by Andy Donato, executed in pen, ink, and grey wash on wove paper. The satirical scene depicts British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher standing before the door of 10 Downing Street, holding a statement. She is surrounded by television cameras, one labelled BBC, and a member of the press wearing a jacket marked PUCY NEWS. A police officer in a traditional bobby's helmet stands behind her. The speech bubble contains the text: WE HAVE TRIED TO NEGOTIATE... BUT WITHOUT SUCCESS... THEREFORE IT IS WITH GREAT REGRET THAT I MUST ORDER FULL SCALE NEGOTIATIONS TO BEGIN AT ONCE!. The work is presented in a light-toned wooden frame with a dark inner fillet and a cream-coloured mount. A gallery label for painted city of Toronto, Ontario, is affixed to the reverse. Signed lower left: DONATO Inscribed lower left: TORONTOSUN Dimensions (frame): H 62.2 cm x W 51.4 cm Condition: The drawing appears to be in good overall condition with no visible foxing or tears to the paper. There is a faint vertical smudge or tide mark to the upper right corner of the mount. The frame shows minor surface wear and small scuffs consistent with age.
