National Cash Register Company Model 1842-L electric cash register, serial no. 2660280, manufactured in Dayton, Ohio. NCR shipment records place this serial number between no. 2640000, dated January 27, 1927, and no. 2790000, dated January 26, 1928, supporting an approximate 1927 production date. Designed for retail and mercantile use, the register features a simulated mahogany wood-grain finish applied over its substantial metal cabinet, a matching cash-drawer base, denomination keys, motor control, "No Sale" and "Paid Out" functions, and a customer-facing display indicating both transaction type and amount. The interior retains its NCR electric motor and operating mechanism, marked for 110-120 volts and direct or alternating current of 60 cycles or less. The front identification plates are marked "The National Cash Register Co., Dayton, Ohio, U.S.A.," serial no. 2660280, and model 1842-L. Simulated wood-grain metal cabinets were among the finishes used on NCR machines of this period. The register retains an appealing aged appearance with wear, scratches, finish loss, and areas of flaking and separation around the base and cabinet edges. The side access door opens to reveal the motor, gears, wiring, and other internal components. The electrical cord has considerable age-related deterioration and should be replaced or professionally inspected before the register is connected to power. Electrical operation, key functions, internal mechanism, transaction display, and cash-drawer operation have not been tested. Approx. dimensions are 20.5" W 16" D 21" H. Heavy.
