Early Sundstrand hand-crank printing adding machine manufactured by the Sundstrand Adding Machine Company of Rockford, Illinois. Serial no. 43082 BS falls within the documented 1923 production range, dating this example to the early years of the company's commercial adding-machine manufacture. Sundstrand machines were developed from Gustaf David Sundstrand's patented adding-and-listing mechanism and helped establish the compact 10-key numeric arrangement later adopted throughout the calculator and office-machine industries. Designed for accounting offices, banks, stores, and other businesses, the machine allowed figures to be entered through its numbered keyboard and then added and printed onto a paper roll by operating the side crank. Sundstrand's patented system incorporated a printing mechanism, automatic carrying between numerical columns, subtotal capability, and provisions for printing entries and totals in contrasting colors. This example features a black enameled-metal housing, gold Sundstrand lettering, numbered keys with red function controls, visible mechanical register, paper-roll carriage, platen, and side operating crank. The identification plate is marked "43082 BS" and "Pat'd Dec. 26, 1916." An applied provenance label identifies it as Pocket's adding machine from the Miners Mercantile Store, adding regional business and mercantile interest. The machine retains an appealing aged surface with scattered finish wear, scratches, oxidation, and signs of prior commercial use. The keyboard, crank, paper carriage, and principal mechanical components remain present. Operation, printing function, and calculating accuracy have not been tested. Approx. 16" long.
