Early-to-mid-20th-century Ohaus Style 2 mechanical balance scale featuring a substantial cast-metal base, two circular weighing pans, a central balance indicator, and a graduated beam with sliding rider calibrated from zero to 10 grams. This style of equal-arm balance was designed for comparative and precision weighing and was commonly used in pharmacies, laboratories, schools, and commercial settings. Comparable Ohaus Style 2 balances are documented with a 10-gram graduated beam and were produced with removable pans in several materials. The balance operates on the traditional equal-arm principle, with the article being weighed placed on one pan and known weights placed on the opposing pan. The sliding rider provided finer measurement without requiring additional fractional weights. This basic weighing arrangement was widely used for pharmaceutical compounding and other applications requiring measured quantities in grams. Accompanied by seven cylindrical metal weights or standards in alternating brass-tone and silver-tone finishes. The pieces have slotted tops and are marked "65 HO," along with additional numerical markings. Their precise application and whether they were originally supplied with this balance have not been confirmed; they are included as shown. The scale retains an appealing aged surface with scattered finish wear, scratches, light oxidation, and evidence of prior use. The base appears to have been refinished in silver at some point, and no manufacturer's plate is presently visible. The pans, graduated beam, rider, central indicator, and principal balance components remain present. Operation, completeness, calibration, and weighing accuracy have not been tested.
