The spring loaded clasp is constructed with parallel bars and a hinged gripping arm for attachment to a necktie. The decorative emblem incorporates a stylized cross inspired design reflecting the university’s Episcopal Christian heritage. Rikkyo began in 1874 as a small private school founded in Tokyo by Channing Moore Williams, a missionary bishop of the American Episcopal Church, to teach English and Bible studies. The institution later developed into Rikkyo University, also known in English as St. Paul’s University, and relocated from Tsukiji to the Ikebukuro campus during the early 20th century. Rikkyo remains recognized for Christian based liberal arts education and is among Japan’s longstanding private universities. The university’s official symbolism was formalized during the 1918 move toward Ikebukuro and traditionally incorporates Christian imagery representing the school’s founding principles.
