AVAILABLE for SHIPPING or LOCAL PICKUP > A substantial signed Cathey Bolton Design & Claywork studio pottery ewer or cruet standing close to 9" tall with the fitted sculptural stopper in place, measuring approximately 3.75" in diameter across the base, with the sharply angled spout extending approximately 2" from the body. The hand formed ceramic body rises from a rounded base into a narrow flared neck, with an asymmetrical spout projecting from one side. Rich turquoise blue glaze flows across the surface in broad passages, joined by olive, moss green and darker earth tones with natural pooling and variation developed during firing. Fine glaze crazing contributes additional depth and texture throughout the surface. The original stopper is especially distinctive, formed with overlapping folded sections and pointed leaflike edges. Deeply carved sunflower, leaf and botanical decoration covers the pale stone colored exterior, while turquoise glaze settles within the recessed design and continues across the interior. The elaborate stopper gives the ewer a highly sculptural presentation beyond the functional ceramic form. The underside bears the circular hand applied mark CATHEY BOLTON DESIGN & CLAYWORK, identifying the work of Waynesville, North Carolina ceramic artist Cathey Bolton. Bolton earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts with a concentration in ceramics from East Carolina University and developed a long professional career producing hand formed functional and decorative pottery. She opened Art on Depot in Waynesville during 2008 within the Historic Frog Level district and later established her studio and gallery at the Corner Station on Depot Street. Her work is recognized for combining practical ceramic forms with expressive glaze movement, carved decoration and individually modeled elements, giving each piece a distinctive handcrafted presence. The dramatic turquoise and olive palette, elongated spout and elaborate botanical stopper make this an unusually sculptural example of contemporary North Carolina studio pottery with strong appeal for collectors of Southern ceramics, Organic Modern design, functional art pottery and American craft.
