The illustrated hardcover album displays a color portrait of Stevens with a flower in her hair, printed song titles at left and her facsimile signature across the lower yellow panel. The cover credits arrangements by Alan Shulman and an orchestra conducted by Sylvan Shulman. Copyright information identifies Columbia Recording Corporation and dates the release to 1947. The complete four-record 78 RPM shellac set is present within the bound interior sleeves. The records have not been tested for play. The selections include SOMEWHERE A VOICE IS CALLING, THE SWEETEST STORY EVER TOLD, LOVE’S OLD SWEET SONG, THE ROSARY, AT DAWNING, A DREAM, HOMING and TREES. Risë Stevens was a prominent American operatic mezzo-soprano whose Columbia recordings included classical, popular and operetta selections. The portrait cover, complete four-record format and 1947 Columbia Masterworks presentation give the album collectible appeal for enthusiasts of vintage vocal recordings, opera memorabilia, early recorded music and period album-cover art. Risë Stevens, born Risë Gus Steenberg in New York City in 1913, was one of the leading American mezzo-sopranos of the 20th century. After studying at the Juilliard School and continuing her training in Europe, she made her operatic debut in Prague in 1936 and joined the Metropolitan Opera in 1938. She remained a major Metropolitan Opera artist for more than two decades and became especially celebrated for her portrayal of the title role in Bizet’s CARMEN. Stevens also brought opera to a broader popular audience through recordings, radio, television and motion pictures. Her film appearances included THE CHOCOLATE SOLDIER with Nelson Eddy and the Academy Award-winning GOING MY WAY with Bing Crosby. She recorded classical, operetta and popular vocal material for Columbia and other labels, including later Columbia studio-cast recordings of THE CHOCOLATE SOLDIER, LADY IN THE DARK and THE KING AND I. Following her retirement from regular operatic performance, Stevens remained active in musical administration and artist development, serving as a director of the Metropolitan Opera National Company and later as president of the Mannes College of Music. She received a Kennedy Center Honor in 1990 and died in 2013 at age 99.
