An Imperial German military "Tornister" field backpack built around a rigid square internal wood frame covered in brown cowhide with its original fur intact. This M1895 pattern pack features black leather perimeter reinforcement edges and heavy leather shoulder straps fitted with iron adjusting buckles. The prominent fold-over outer flap displays four integrated rectangular leather loops intended for securing an infantryman's mess kit (Kochgeschirr) or greatcoat straps. Lifting the main flap reveals an interior lined with heavy, coarse brown canvas, incorporating multi-flap internal storage compartments and canvas pocket dividers that secure via natural leather tabs and roller buckles. Measuring approximately 13.5 inches wide by 13.0 inches high and 5.5 inches deep, the pack displays period-appropriate wear from field service, including surface scuffs across the leather components, oxidation on the iron hardware, and moderate, localized shedding to the natural cowhide fur covering.
