The most defining feature of this military backpack is its outer flap constructed from cowhide, which is attached to a frame reinforced with riveted leather and metal fittings. The body is made of heavy olive canvas with leather straps and hardware for closure and attachment. This model, commonly referred to as the 'Tornister,' was standard issue for German soldiers in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, including World War I. The internal structure includes canvas lining with grid stitch reinforcement. Faint ink inscription visible under the flap, possibly indicating unit or personal identification. Buckles, rivets, leather reinforcement, and stitching are intact, with visible signs of field wear. Dimensions are 15 x 15 inches. This example reflects the utilitarian design adopted for German infantry equipment of its era. PM
