A finely executed miniature gouache by Lawrence Arthur Colley Panton, depicting rushing water flowing through angular rock formations in a highly simplified, modernist composition. Using a restrained palette of cool blues, lavender, grey, and white, Panton transforms a familiar Canadian landscape into an elegant study of form, movement, and light. The bold geometric treatment and rhythmic brushwork are characteristic of the artist's later work, reflecting his interest in abstraction while remaining rooted in the Canadian landscape tradition. Small cabinet-sized gouaches such as this are particularly desirable for their intimacy and painterly immediacy. Artist Biography: Lawrence Arthur Colley Panton (1894–1954) was an influential Canadian painter, printmaker, and educator. Born in Toronto, he studied at the Ontario College of Art under J.W. Beatty and later in Antwerp and Paris. Throughout his career he balanced representational landscape painting with increasingly modernist and abstract compositions, becoming one of Canada's leading interpreters of twentieth-century landscape design. Panton was elected to the Ontario Society of Artists (OSA) and the Royal Canadian Academy of Arts (RCA), and was also a member of the Canadian Society of Graphic Art, Canadian Society of Painters in Water Colour, and the Federation of Canadian Artists. His work is represented in the collections of the National Gallery of Canada, the Art Gallery of Ontario, the McMichael Canadian Art Collection, and numerous public institutions. Small gouaches and mixed-media works have enjoyed strong auction demand in recent years, with even modest examples often exceeding their pre-sale estimates.
