Frame Size: 12.5 × 10 in. A refined early watercolour by French-born Canadian artist Georges Chavignaud, executed during his tenure as Principal of the Victoria School of Art and Design in Halifax. Painted in 1912, the composition presents a quiet study of two slender poplar trees rising from a peaceful meadow, rendered with the artist's characteristic lyrical touch and restrained palette. Soft washes of blue-grey and muted green combine with delicate pencil work to create an atmospheric landscape that reflects Chavignaud's admiration for French Impressionism while maintaining a distinctly Canadian sensibility. Dated works from this important period are sought after by collectors of early Canadian watercolour. Artist Biography: Georges Chavignaud (1865–1944) was a French-born Canadian painter, watercolourist, and educator. Born in Lanvéoc, Brittany, he was inspired by the landscapes of Jean-Baptiste-Camille Corot before studying in Paris, Brussels, and Antwerp. He immigrated to Canada in the late nineteenth century and became an influential figure in Canadian art education. From 1912 to 1916, he served as Principal of the Victoria School of Art and Design in Halifax (now NSCAD University), where he produced many notable Maritime landscapes. Chavignaud was a member of the Ontario Society of Artists, a founding member of Toronto's Arts and Letters Club, and exhibited with the Royal Canadian Academy. His works are represented in the National Gallery of Canada, the Art Gallery of Nova Scotia, and numerous public and private collections.
