Frame Size: 9 × 10.5 in. A finely executed original etching by noted Canadian artist Herbert Raine, depicting the lively marketplace at Dol-de-Bretagne in northwestern France. Executed during Raine's European travels in the early twentieth century, the composition captures the bustle of market day with expressive linework and confident tonal contrasts. Figures gathered beneath temporary market stalls are framed by the distinctive medieval architecture of the Breton town, creating an atmospheric study of everyday life. Works from Raine's French period are admired for their sensitive observation and accomplished etching technique. Artist Biography: Herbert Raine, RCA (1875–1951) was a Canadian painter, illustrator, and printmaker. Born in England, he immigrated to Canada and studied at the Central Ontario School of Art before furthering his training in Paris. Raine became particularly known for his accomplished etchings and landscapes inspired by both Europe and Canada. He was elected to the Royal Canadian Academy of Arts (RCA) and exhibited with the Ontario Society of Artists and other prominent organizations. His works are represented in numerous Canadian public and private collections, and his finely crafted etchings remain sought after by collectors of early Canadian printmaking.
