A finely executed original etching by noted Canadian printmaker Frederick Hagan, titled Young Evergreens and created in 1987. This intimate woodland composition showcases Hagan's mastery of tonal etching, capturing the quiet beauty of a young stand of conifers with expressive line work and subtle atmospheric shading. Pencil signed, titled, dated "1987," and numbered 44 from the edition of 100, this work is an excellent example of the artist's celebrated printmaking practice. Hagan's prints remain highly regarded by collectors of Canadian graphic art and are represented in many important public and institutional collections across Canada. Artist Biography Robert Frederick "Fred" Hagan (1918–2003) was one of Canada's foremost printmakers, painters, and art educators. Born in Toronto, he studied at the Ontario College of Art under John Alfsen and Group of Seven member Franklin Carmichael before continuing his studies at the Art Students League and George C. Miller's renowned lithography workshop in New York. In 1946, Hagan joined the faculty of the Ontario College of Art (now OCAD University), where he taught drawing and printmaking for 37 years and became Head of Printmaking in 1955. He served as President of the Canadian Society of Graphic Art on multiple occasions and was an active member of the Canadian Society of Painter-Etchers and Engravers and the Ontario Society of Artists. His work is represented in the collections of the National Gallery of Canada, the Art Gallery of Ontario, and numerous museums and public institutions. Among his many honors are the Canadian Centennial Medal (1967) and the Royal Canadian Academy Medal (1998).
