Artist: Attributed to Florence Helena McGillivray (Canadian, 1864–1938) Title: Untitled (Lakeside Landscape) Medium: Colored crayon on paper Image Size: 4.5 x 6.5 in. Frame Size: 10.5 x 12.5 in. Signature: Signed lower left "F.H. McGillivray" A delicate colored crayon landscape attributed to Florence Helena McGillivray, depicting a tranquil lakeshore with wildflowers, gently sloping banks, and a distant shoreline rendered in soft pastel hues. The intimate composition demonstrates the artist's sensitive handling of color and atmosphere, capturing the quiet beauty of the Canadian landscape through loose, expressive strokes. Artist Biography Florence Helena McGillivray (1864–1938) was an important Canadian landscape painter and educator, born in Whitby, Ontario. She studied at the Central Ontario School of Art before furthering her education in Paris at the Académie de la Grande Chaumière, where she embraced the influences of French Post-Impressionism. McGillivray exhibited at the prestigious Salon des Beaux-Arts in Paris and became one of Canada's leading women artists of the early twentieth century. Her bold colour and modern approach to landscape painting are widely believed to have influenced Tom Thomson during his formative years. She later taught in Ottawa and exhibited extensively with major Canadian art societies. Today, her works are represented in the collections of the National Gallery of Canada, the Art Gallery of Ontario, and numerous public institutions.
