Hudson River Inlay Company, 'The Zion Narrows'

This wood marquetry landscape panel, by the Hudson River Inlay company, depicts a soaring bird amidst the towering cliffs of the Zion Narrows. The composition is expertly crafted from a variety of natural wood veneers, utilizing the inherent grain patterns and color variations of different wood species to simulate the textured surfaces of the canyon walls and the movement of the river below. A dark wood veneer is used for the silhouette of the bird, and a circular sun is inlaid in the upper left section. The work is housed in a tiered wooden frame featuring a light wood inlay border. The signature Nelson is incised into the lower right corner of the panel. Jeff Nelson is the founder and principal designer of that studio. Measures: 23.25 inches x 27.25 inches tall.The marquetry panel is in good condition, with no evidence of lifting, cracking, or missing veneer. The frame displays minor surface wear consistent with age and handling, including light scratches and scuffs, primarily along the bottom edge. The verso is fitted with a cardboard backing and a hanging wire.
