Title: Cubist Portrait of a Woman with Geometric Forms Technique: Oil on canvas Measures: 31 x 23 inches (78.7 x 58.4 cm) Year: Undated Condition: Appears in good overall condition, with vivid coloration, strong graphic definition, and clearly articulated geometric forms. Minor surface irregularities, light handling marks, and age-related wear may be present. Presented in a black wooden frame showing minor signs of surface wear. The reverse displays the canvas support and wooden stretcher with scattered discoloration and handling marks. Not examined out of the frame. Condition is described from the photographs supplied. Please review all photographs carefully, as they form an integral part of the condition description. Provenance: Passed by private arrangement from the private collection of the Ferreira family in Lisbon to the private collection of the Santos family in Coimbra. Visual Description: A vibrant Cubist-inspired portrait depicts a stylized female figure through an imaginative arrangement of geometric forms, exaggerated facial features, and saturated colors. The composition centers on a frontal female bust with dramatically asymmetrical eyes, a fragmented nose, and abstracted lips outlined in contrasting green, blue, and yellow. Her flowing orange and red hair is constructed from rhythmic parallel lines, while the upper portion of the composition features two large elliptical forms resembling decorative elements of a headdress. The figure's torso is divided into intersecting geometric patterns, with two prominent circular forms rendered in red, white, and blue. A bright palette of yellow, orange, crimson, turquoise, lavender, and green creates a lively interplay of color and structure. The background contrasts a textured blue passage on the left with a softer lavender field on the right, emphasizing the central figure. Bold black outlines define the fragmented facial features and decorative elements, while the juxtaposition of frontal and profile perspectives introduces a sense of movement and spatial complexity. The upper left bears a painted inscription reading "Picasso," while the upper right displays the date "3.9.68," repeated in blue on the reverse. The composition reflects the expressive visual language of Cubism and twentieth-century modernist portraiture through its geometric fragmentation, distorted anatomy, and imaginative use of color. This composition reflects stylistic elements commonly associated with major figures in modern and contemporary art.
