Title: Double Portrait with Fragmented Faces and Surrealist Landscape Technique: Oil on canvas Measures: 28 x 20 inches (71.1 x 50.8 cm) Year: Undated Condition: Appears in good overall condition, with strong coloration, detailed figurative elements, and clearly defined contrasts between light and shadow. Minor surface irregularities, light handling marks, and age-related wear may be present. Presented in a dark reddish-brown wooden frame showing minor signs of surface wear. The reverse displays an aged canvas support with areas of discoloration and handling marks. Not examined out of the frame. Condition is described from the photographs supplied. Please review all photographs carefully, as they form an integral part of the condition description. Provenance: Transferred within the private collection of the Doyle family of Dublin from parent to adult child. Visual Description: A surrealist composition presents two closely joined human faces emerging from a shared, elongated form at the center of an architectural landscape. The figure on the left displays an intense expression, exaggerated eyes, prominent eyebrows, and a long, curved mustache, while the face on the right appears calmer, with softly modeled features and a contemplative gaze. Their overlapping forms create an ambiguous double portrait, combining contrasting identities within a single sculptural structure. Above the figures, a cracked spherical form appears suspended against a dramatic background of brown, ochre, green, and yellow. Fragmented classical arches frame the composition, introducing a theatrical architectural setting that contrasts with the distorted human features. A small female figure dressed in blue stands at the lower left, while a stylized lion's head occupies the lower right. Subtle passages of light and shadow emphasize the sculptural quality of the faces, while the surrounding landscape is rendered in muted earth tones and atmospheric color transitions. The combination of distorted anatomy, symbolic imagery, classical architectural fragments, and dreamlike spatial relationships evokes the visual language of Surrealism. A stylized painted inscription appears at the lower right. This composition reflects stylistic elements commonly associated with major figures in modern and contemporary art.
