Title: Woman Embracing a Cat Technique: Mixed media on paper Measures: 10 x 14 inches (approximately 25.4 x 35.6 cm) Year: Undated Inscription: An inscription reading “Gustav Klimt” appears in the upper-left corner. Condition: Good overall condition. The sheet retains rich coloration and visible painterly texture. Minor surface wear, handling marks, tonal variation, and age-related imperfections may be present. Please review the supplied photograph carefully for a complete assessment. Provenance: Private collection, Montreal; reportedly acquired from a French private owner during the 1980s before passing by family descent. Information regarding its history prior to that acquisition is limited. Visual Description: An intimate decorative composition depicting a woman tenderly embracing a sleeping cat. The woman bends her head toward the animal, their faces touching at the center of the image. Her closed eyes and protective gesture create a quiet sense of affection, while the cat rests peacefully against her arm with one pale paw extending forward. The figures are surrounded by an elaborate arrangement of ornamental patterns rendered in gold, ochre, black, white, rust, and burgundy. The woman’s garment is decorated with vertical black rectangles and circular motifs, while the cat’s body merges into a richly patterned field of spirals and flower-like forms. Black-and-white vertical stripes anchor the lower portion of the composition, contrasting with the luminous gold background. Flattened spatial relationships, enveloping contours, symbolic intimacy, mosaic-like decoration, and the extensive use of gold and repeating geometric motifs reflect the ornamental visual language associated with the Vienna Secession and European Symbolism. This composition reflects stylistic elements commonly associated with major figures in modern and contemporary art.
