Mourning Belt Sash Strand 84-Inch. Dating to the late Victorian era (c. 1870s–1890s), this extraordinary 7-foot (84-inch) unsigned mourning accessory—attributed to French or English manufacture—features hand-strung, faceted black "French jet" (molded black glass) plaques and accent beads set within a multi-strand cord netting structure. Popularized during Queen Victoria's extended mourning period, these accessories were quintessential components of formal period attire, and this exceptionally long piece was designed to be dramatically draped or wrapped multiple times as a waist sash. Structurally compromised yet historically compelling, the item displays typical age-related wear including severe fraying and looseness to the original black thread, minor flea bites and chipping along the glass facet borders, and at least one centerpiece panel cracked completely through, making professional restringing or stabilization strongly recommended prior to use or display.
