Stanton Novelties Springfield Ohio. This intriguing late 19th-century Victorian miniature novelty portrait card features a bearded gentleman holding a hat (with his middle finger extended!), printed in an oval frame by the Stanton Photo Novelty Co. of Springfield, Ohio. Dubbed a "Trilby Photo"—named after George du Maurier's wildly popular 1894 novel Trilby which sparked a massive pop-culture craze for "Trilby" novelty items—the reverse bears printed promotional text detailing a mail-order photo reproduction service offering "12 'Trilby' photos... 25c. a Dozen," as well as "Photo Jewelry." Miniature novelty card photographs of this era are highly collectible among enthusiasts of Victorian photography, mail-order ephemera, 1890s pop-culture fad items, and Ohio history. Produced by Stanton Photo Novelty Co. (Springfield, OH), estimated c. 1895–1900, original miniature albumen/gelatin photo card mounted on brown cardstock board, studio marked "Stanton Photo Co Springfield O." on the lower front and fully printed on the reverse, measures approximately 2.25 x 3.5 inches. Displays expected signs of age including minor corner wear, subtle edge rubbing, faint paper toning, and minor surface marks, though the photographic image remains clear and the reverse advertising copy is fully legible; no major tears or severe creases observed. See photos for close-up details.
