AVAILABLE for SHIPPING or LOCAL PICKUP > Measuring 60" x 80", this exceptional antique handmade tablecloth is worked in a soft ivory tone and weighs 1-1/4 lbs, giving the large textile a notably delicate, airy character. The cloth is constructed through intricate openwork in which fine single-thread mesh connects denser multi-thread designs, creating a highly detailed surface of repeating floral medallions, geometric accents, scrolling motifs and framed borders. The composition is especially elaborate, arranged around a central rectangular panel and surrounded by successive decorative fields, with repeating floral medallions carried throughout the body and into the broad outer border. The scalloped perimeter adds another layer of refinement without making the cloth visually heavy. This type of filet-style handmade openwork was prized for the contrast between the nearly transparent netted ground and the more substantial worked motifs. When displayed over a polished dining table, the wood finish shows through the open mesh and becomes part of the presentation, dramatically defining the ivory floral and geometric designs, as shown in the photograph. Filet and related netted lace techniques have a long history in European decorative needlework and became especially popular for formal household linens during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Large tablecloths of this quality required extensive handwork, with the finished effect depending on the careful balance between extremely fine connecting threads and the heavier patterned areas. A particularly attractive antique dining-room textile with strong heirloom, Victorian, Edwardian, traditional and cottagecore appeal. CONDITION REPORT > Stored safely. This textile has not been recently laundered but has no overt odor. Perhaps typical and minor elements relative to age, minimal use and materials.
