AVAILABLE FOR SHIPPING or LOCAL PICKUP > Framed folk-art work titled Hop-A-Long Jack Rabbit, measuring 12.5" x 10.75" overall, based on the whimsical imagery of American folk artist Jeri Ryel. The central printed image depicts a dressed white rabbit riding a brightly colored rooster through a rural landscape. The artist name and copyright date 1994 are printed within the image near the rooster, while the title is penciled along the lower margin of the print. The print is mounted within an unusually elaborate custom mat treatment incorporating hand-cut paper decoration. Black silhouette cuttings of rabbits and foliage extend across the upper and lower mat, complemented by individually cut green grass forms and other layered paper elements. Below the image, the title Hop-A-Long Jack Rabbit and the artist name Jeri Ryel are additionally hand-penned directly onto the mat. The combination of printed image and separately applied paper-cut decoration gives the presentation a dimensional folk-art character rather than the appearance of a conventionally matted print. Ryel is documented as an American folk artist particularly associated with scherenschnitte, the traditional German art of decorative paper cutting, frequently combined with watercolor and painted imagery. Her work was sufficiently established by the early 1990s to be featured in national folk-art publications: the Guild of American Papercutters reported a Painted Scissors Cutting House Blessing by Jeri Ryel appearing in the December 1993 issue of Early American Life, while a contemporary Denver arts review specifically described her work as water-colored scherenschnitte. Surviving works show that Ryel repeatedly combined painted or printed folk imagery with elaborate cut-paper silhouettes, and subjects include rabbits, birds, farm animals, dolls and humorous rural scenes. A group of five signed Jeri Ryel scherenschnitte and watercolor works, including a 1994 example, was offered by Pook & Pook in 2019, further documenting her production during this same period. Commercially reproduced designs also exist, including later tin signs carrying her name and imagery, indicating that some of her folk-art designs were licensed or adapted for broader decorative production. Presented under glass in an especially distinctive natural wood frame having a heavily textured maroon and black finish, which complements the red, black and green palette of the layered mat and artwork. CONDITION REPORT > A notably well preserved example.
