AVAILABLE FOR SHIPPING or LOCAL PICKUP > The New Amsterdam: The Biography of a Broadway Theatre by Mary C. Henderson, with foreword by architect Hugh Hardy, published in 1997 by Hyperion/Disney Editions. A large-format illustrated volume devoted to the history, architecture, restoration and theatrical legacy of New York’s celebrated New Amsterdam Theatre. The book traces the theatre from the original 1903 construction and early Broadway years through the Ziegfeld era, later decline and extensive restoration completed in the 1990s. The most distinctive feature is the unusual black cloth split-panel binding, designed so the two front panels open from the center in the manner of theatre doors. Gold and silver decoration to the exterior includes the title, floral corner ornament and stylized theatrical masks. Opening the panels reveals a dramatic panoramic photographic view of the restored theatre interior, creating a presentation format specifically suited to the subject. Contemporary coverage noted this theatrical two-panel cover construction as a defining design element of the book. Interior pages are extensively illustrated with archival photographs, architectural details, restoration views and full-page color photography documenting the ornate interiors, decorative plasterwork, murals, sculptural details and other features of the historic theatre. The volume contains 191 pages and was issued as a substantial oversized presentation book, originally carrying a $75 retail price. An especially attractive Broadway, New York theatre and architectural history volume, with the split-opening cover providing considerably more visual interest than a conventional hardcover book. CONDITION REPORT > A notably well preserved example.
