MID-CENTURY MODERN COUROC CHEVRON TRAY > Measuring 12.5" x 9.5" overall, a Mid-Century Modern Couroc of Monterey, California presentation tray produced for Chevron Lubricants, featuring a vivid inset depiction of San Francisco's Golden Gate Bridge against the characteristic jet-black Couroc field. The design incorporates contrasting gold-tone and reddish wood elements with stylized shoreline and bird details, all remaining sharply defined, while the slight raised flange provides subtle border distinction. Marked to the reverse with the incised Couroc Monterey, California signature and retaining the oval foil label reading Presented By Chevron Lubricants, identifying this example as a corporate presentation or promotional piece. Couroc of Monterey, founded in California in 1948, became known for distinctive black phenolic resin trays and serving wares decorated with hand-inlaid materials including wood, metal, shell and other contrasting elements. Their bold black surfaces, graphic compositions and California-themed imagery became closely associated with postwar Mid Century Modern decorative design. Chevron's California history extends back to the 19th century through the Pacific Coast Oil Company and later Standard Oil Company of California. The Chevron name and chevron emblem became increasingly prominent during the 20th century, making this tray an appealing crossover between Mid-Century Modern design, California decorative arts, San Francisco imagery and Chevron corporate advertising.
