Mexico TALAVERA BLUE WHITE BULL & COWBOY PLATTER

Updated September 24, 2026

AVAILABLE FOR SHIPPING or LOCAL PICKUP > A large oval Talavera-style pottery serving platter measuring 17.5" long x 13.5" wide, formed with a notably raised flange rim surrounding the depressed center. The broad flange is decorated in deep cobalt blue over a white glazed ground with repeating scroll, lattice and floral motifs. The recessed center carries a hand-painted pastoral scene depicting a bull with two mounted horsemen in a rural landscape beneath a tree, surrounded by an ornate cobalt floral border. Underside carries hand-painted markings reading MN TALAVERA 82 ~ 044-45-3 ~ JM, with the raised foot rim exposing the reddish earthenware body beneath the glaze. Talavera is a traditional form of tin-glazed earthenware pottery associated particularly with Puebla, Mexico, recognized for an opaque white glazed ground and extensive hand-painted decoration, with cobalt blue among the most characteristic colors. This large oval form combines that traditional blue and white palette with a pictorial cowboys on horses and livestock herding subject. The substantial size, elevated flange and recessed pictorial center make the platter appropriate for serving and table presentation, while the broad decorative border and hand-painted scene also lend well to cabinet, wall or easel display. CONDITION REPORT > A notably well preserved example.
