AVAILABLE FOR SHIPPING or LOCAL PICKUP > A large hand-crafted French faience pottery centerpiece bowl standing 5.5" tall, measuring 12" long x 6" wide to the body, not including the extended handles at each end. The elongated oval form is raised on a low foot and finished with a dramatic scalloped rim and molded side handles. The white glazed surface is decorated in deep cobalt blue with repeating floral, foliate and scroll motifs characteristic of traditional Rouen faience, with the hand-painted decoration following the shaped rim and extending around the exterior body. Underside is hand inscribed Fait main à Rouen ~ A. Augy ~ 2002, identifying the piece as handmade in Rouen by Alain Augy and dated 2002. Augy operated one of Rouen’s last traditional faience workshops, taking over the former Carpentier workshop in 1995 and continuing production of hand-crafted Rouen faience until retirement in 2021. The body is traditional French faience pottery, a form of earthenware made from porous red or buff clay covered with an opaque white tin glaze, then decorated by hand and fired again. Unlike porcelain, faience is an earthenware pottery tradition, with Rouen among the best-known French centers for this type of production. The substantial size, high scalloped border and twin molded handles give the piece strong decorative presence. Appropriate for use as a console bowl, centerpiece, fruit bowl, floral vessel or decorative serving piece, while equally suited for display with French faience, blue and white pottery or traditional European ceramics. CONDITION REPORT > Not cleaned or altered ~ Overall, a notably well preserved example ~ Perhaps typical and minor elements relative to handmade manner of production, age and materials.
