AVAILABLE for SHIPPING or LOCAL PICKUP > Hand turned North Carolina stoneware mug attributed to the Shelton pottery tradition of Seagrove, standing 3.5 inches tall and measuring 3 inches in diameter across the body. The mug is finished in a warm earth tone glaze with the softly rounded, functional form associated with traditional Seagrove utility pottery. The underside is signed and dated 1982. Virginia Shelton was a prolific Seagrove potter who worked at J. B. Cole Pottery and came from the extended Cole and King pottery families, both important names in the North Carolina pottery tradition. Later Shelton family pottery continued many of the forms and glaze traditions associated with J. B. Cole. The 1982 date is particularly notable because it predates the later Shelton’s Pottery studio, which sources place around 1988, indicating this mug belongs to the earlier period of Shelton family production rather than the later studio operation. CONDITION REPORT > A notably well preserved example displaying no overt issues.
