Traditional Diné (Navajo) pottery jar by Rose Williams (1915–2015), recognized as an influential matriarch of contemporary Navajo pottery. This tall vessel measures approximately 8" tall, with a 4.5" diameter opening and approximately 5" at its widest point. The hand-formed jar features warm reddish-brown coloration with dramatic smoky black fire-cloud variations and a lustrous surface consistent with traditional piñon pitch finishing. A raised biyo’ appliqué band encircles the vessel beneath the rim, adding a distinctive traditional decorative element. The underside is signed “RW.” Surface variations, firing marks, scratches, rubbing, and irregularities are visible and contribute to the handmade character of the piece. A substantial example of signed Rose Williams pottery and an appealing piece of Diné ceramic art, Navajo pottery, Southwestern Native American art, and piñon-pitch pottery. See photos for details and condition.
