Early Art Deco figural sculpture depicting a swaggering pirate or swashbuckler posed with one hand at his waist and the other resting on a long sword or cane, dressed in a loose shirt, cropped trousers, boots and head covering with a flowing sash at his side. The figure is executed in clad metal with remnants of polychrome decoration. Mounted on a stepped rectangular base with a relief maritime scene to the front and the word “PIRATE” cast into the reverse. This form is associated with sculptor Paul Herzel and the Pompeian Bronze/Armor Bronze line of pirate figures produced in the late 1920s; closely related Herzel examples are documented as circa 1928. The piece shows considerable age-related finish loss, rubbing, oxidation, scratches and wear to the original polychrome and bronze-clad surface, particularly across the back and raised areas, with additional wear and oxidation to the underside. Measures 8"H x 3.5"W x 2.5"W.
