Asian Painted Leather & Brass Clad Storage Trunk

Substantial antique Asian storage trunk or chest constructed with a wood body wrapped in richly painted and embossed red leather, accented with brass-clad edge banding, rows of domed metal studs, and decorative brass-tone hardware. The front and top are elaborately decorated with figural scenes depicting robed figures in a landscape setting, surrounded by dense scrolling floral and foliate borders in cream, blue, green, and gold tones. A protective glass panel has been added over the top, allowing the painted surface beneath to remain visible while providing a practical display surface. The chest is fitted with side carrying handles and rests on a later brass-tone base or stand. The interior is plain wood with a hinged lid and shows age and use. Condition is notably rustic, with widespread surface wear, rubbing, losses to the painted decoration, scratches, abrasions, cracking and lifting to the leather, scattered dents and deformation to the brass-clad trim, oxidation, small losses, and a visible puncture/hole to the painted front panel, all consistent with age and use. Measures 20"H x 34"w x 18"D.
