Chinese Style 4 Panel Black Lacquer Folding Screen

Updated September 19, 2026

Large decorative four-panel Asian-inspired folding floor screen, executed in black lacquer with polychrome and gilt-toned decoration depicting cranes or heron-like birds among flowering and leafy branches. The principal scene extends fluidly across the hinged panels, highlighted by a dramatic large bird with outstretched wings perched amid foliage, accompanied by smaller flying birds and delicate botanical motifs rendered in soft cream, gold, rose, and copper tones against the glossy black ground. One panel is further embellished with a vertical column of stylized Chinese calligraphic characters, while the outer borders carry repeating abstract bird and scroll motifs that frame the composition with a strong graphic rhythm. The panels are joined by metal hinges and terminate in brass-tone protective corner mounts at the feet, lending the screen an attractive furniture-quality presentation. The present screen shows scattered surface scuffs, scratches, cloudy areas and rubbing to the lacquer, with minor edge and corner wear and some wear around the hinges and lower brass mounts, all consistent with age, display and normal handling; the overall decorative scheme remains vivid and visually impressive. A striking room divider, decorative backdrop, or large-scale Asian-inspired furnishing with strong interior-design appeal. Measures 72"H x 64"W.
