An unusual 19th century Austrian brass rocking baby cradle, constructed with an elaborate open framework of sweeping scrolls, looping tubular brasswork, turned decorative spacers, and gracefully curved supports. The suspended cradle is mounted within a freestanding rocking frame and retains its tall arched canopy support terminating in a large curled hook, originally intended to support drapery or netting. Repeated scroll and heart-like motifs give the cradle an especially sculptural appearance, while the curved base and decorative metal framework reflect the ornate historicist taste popular in Central Europe during the Victorian era. The brass surface has developed extensive aged patina with oxidation, tarnishing, rubbing, discoloration, and general surface wear consistent with age and use, contributing to its strong antique character. Measures 73"H x 44"W x 24"D.
