Vintage 1970s Elgin SA Swiss mechanical open-face pocket watch featuring a gold-tone base metal case. The solid snap-on outer caseback showcases a highly detailed high-relief embossed outdoor scene depicting a fisherman casting his line on a riverbank, an engraved laurel-leaf patterned texture along the case walls, and an ornate scrollwork bow loop. The inside caseback displays a satin gold finish stamped with "ELGIN SWITZERLAND", "BASE METAL", reference "0040-0818", serial "98777", and "SWISS CASE". The cream-colored pictorial farming dial showcases a center portrait of cattle livestock with dairy farmers, painted black Roman numeral hour paths, an outer multi-colored floral vine border interspersed with dairy cows and red 13-to-24 military timeline tracks, black ornate hands, a sunken sub-seconds register above the 6 position, and lower tracks reading "MADE IN FRANCE". The watch is powered by a gold-gilt Swiss-made, unadjusted manual-wind movement signed Elgin carrying a 17 jewels configuration and an MX40 caliber stamp on the lower bridge plates. This mechanical pocket watch is running as of the time of listing, though a professional service is required for accurate timekeeping, and extended runtime without service is not guaranteed.
