A first American edition of Alfred Russel Wallace's landmark natural history and travel work, The Malay Archipelago: The Land of the Orang-Utan, and the Bird of Paradise, published in New York by Harper & Brothers in 1869. Complete with illustrated plates and tissue-guarded frontispiece, bound in original publisher's green cloth with gilt-stamped bird of paradise and orangutan motifs. Condition noted: original publisher's cloth shows light shelf wear, softening at spine ends, and mild rubbing; interior pages clean with minor age toning and scattered foxing to tissue guards.
