A vintage rectangular trinket box constructed from gold-tone base metal, manufactured in Japan for Schmid Brothers, Inc. The box features an all-over embossed high-relief pattern of scrolling foliate and acanthus leaf motifs on the sides and base. The hinged lid is inset with a padded textile panel depicting the Impressionist painting The Dancing Class by Edgar Degas. The interior is lined with a plush red velvet material and includes padded side bolsters. The base of the box retains two original applied labels: a white paper label identifying the artwork and artist, and a black and gold foil sticker featuring the Schmid Brothers lyre logo and origin. The item is housed in its original white manufacturer's box with blue logo printing. Width approx. 2.5 inches (measured against a ruler). Condition: The box is in good vintage condition. Significant wear and thinning of the gold-tone finish is visible on the raised decorative elements, corners, and the front thumbpiece. The printed fabric insert is in excellent state with no visible staining or fraying. The interior velvet lining is clean and intact. The original cardboard packaging shows general shelf wear and age-related yellowing.
